Why everything else depends on this

Most organisations already care about disability inclusion. The trouble is that caring isn't a plan. Without a named owner, a few clear goals and some money set aside, inclusion depends on one or two committed people. When they get busy or move on, it stops.

That's why Backing is the first letter in BELONG. It's what keeps hiring, spaces, accommodations, culture and growth moving when nobody is pushing.

Step 1

The five-minute policy check

The RPwD Act, 2016 asks every establishment to publish an equal opportunity policy. Here's what a good one covers. Tick what's already true.

A pointer, not legal advice. Check the Act and the rules that apply to you.

Step 2

Fill in the plan on a page

Six things go on the page. If your leadership team can agree on these, you have a plan.

1

A senior owner

One named leader, who reports progress to the leadership team at least twice a year.

2

Where you are today

Your BELONG score and stage, so next year you can see how far you've come.

3

Three goals, with measures

Stuck? Start with your two lowest BELONG areas, plus one goal about listening to people with disabilities.

4

One action per quarter

Each with an owner. Small and finished beats big and stalled.

5

A budget

Even a small one. A line in the budget is what turns a priority into a commitment.

6

A way to listen

How you'll hear from employees or students with disabilities: a network, a survey, regular conversations.
